WEEK 6 - Statement of Intent Draft

I have chosen to use the song 'Where is the Love?" by The Black Eyed Peas for my protest music video. The Black Eyed Peas are an American musical group that formed in the year 1995. Originally they were an alternative hip hop group however, they subsequently changes their musical sound to pop and dance-pop music. My song choice is well known across the globe appearing top of charts in countries such as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland etc. I chose this song as I feel like it promotes many different powerful messages within the song itself covering multiple worldwide problems. Some of these issues include terrorism, war, hypocrisy, racism, gang crime, pollution and intolerance/violence against the LGBTQ+ community. The Black Eyed Peas are simply trying to spread awareness of issues that are going on in and around the world. The song questions whether there can love in a society full of hate and violence. The song was rel...

WEEK 5 - Audience Description

Brief: A socially-conscious, 16-25 years, middle to upmarket demographic Audience Description  The 'perfect' audience that the video will be directed at will be a socially-conscious, 16-25 year old, middle market demographic group. The audience will be aware of current global situations and trends and social movements. The members of this 'perfect' audience are likely to stand up for what they believe in and understand that by doing so they may be able to make a change if they work together however, they will also understand that this will not always be an easy target to achieve.  Attracting The Audience My music video will attract the 'perfect' audience by not only sharing one but multiple meanings and messages with the viewers. This will then enable each person to interpret and take something different away with them giving the music video a wide span of meaning to each individual. The music video will have a different twist on it so it will be able...

WEEK 4 - Song Choice

"Where Is the Love?" – Black Eyed Peas I have chosen this song to create a music video for as it is as strong protest song when is was released in 2003 as it is today. As well as having a direct message I am able to interpret the video in multiple ways which will give me increased potential to create an interesting perspective throughout my music video.  The Black Eyed Peas released their song "Where Is the Love?" in response to the 9/11 terror attacks. The lyrics address issues including terrorism, racism, gang crime, pollution, war, intolerance, and violence against LGBT people.  I feel as if this is a strong choice as the song holds several meanings with a range of deep connections beneath.

WEEK 3 - Protest Song Video Analysis (first 10 shots) x3

KENDRICK LAMAR - ‘Alright’   0.00      0.06  0.08      0.10  0.14      0.17  0.20      0.22  0.24      0.28  Throughout the entirety of the music video there are many different shots taken from a range of angles, including looking up at something (usually a building) or down are something. You can see this within the first 10 shots of the video above. This allows levels to each individual shot taken. These shots also feature a small amount of actual camera movement to match the flow of the music. Furthermore, within the first 10 shots of the video there are no people present, therefore this leads to the viewers eyes to wonder more instead of focusing onto one individual. The shot duration throughout the video is rather consistent around 2 seconds usually. However, the first shot lasts for 6 seconds. I feel as if this helps establish the begin...

WEEK 2 - Research Into Similar Videos x3

Video 1 – Kendrick Lamar ‘Alright’    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-48u_uWMHY The area of this video which I would like to replicate is the direction in which it addresses the current affairs. It is rather simple yet very effective.  Cinematography Throughout the music video, Kendrick Lamar is seen in many different types of shots such as, close up, medium and long shots. As well as being present in these variety of different shots he is also staged not only centrally but left, right, top and bottom of the shot. This gives us a sense that he is really taking up each shot from a different perspective which may represent how the media and public view certain issues differently. Editing and sound A large proportion of the song is lip-synced by Kendrick Lamar himself and sometimes others around him for example when he is among the group of young people or when he is in the car with his 'friend'. This allows the viewer to focus on the words of the...
